The Fitness Trends To Look Out For In 2017

2 MIN READ • 14th December 2016

2016 introduced us to fusion fitness and we're predicting big things for the next 12 months

Want to switch up your fitness regime? We’re bringing you our 2017 trend report so invest in some boxing gloves and prepare to start sprinting the stairs…

  • 1 Boxing
Group exercise classes are not going anywhere but 2017 will see a return to basics with the classics taking centre stage. “Boxing has already begun to have a revival,” explains Frida Harju, in-house nutritionist at health app Lifesum. “People are trying new forms of boxing such as the boxerina workout which combines fast boxing movements with barre workouts to help build strength and improve flexibility.”

  • 2 Floatfit
HIIT training has become more and more popular recently but 2017 will see high intensity interval training change course and we can’t wait to dive in. “Floatfit follows the same principles of HIIT but the class is conducted on water,” says Frida. “By taking part in the class while balancing on an inflatable board, your muscles work harder to maintain balance therefore maximising the effect of each movement.”

  • 3 Orange Theory
This high-intensity workout has already gained momentum across the pond and is set to take the UK by storm in early 2017. “This heart-based workout can torch up to 1,000 calories per hour and even continue to burn calories up to 36 hours after,” Frida states. Orange Theory mixes intense bouts of cardio with strength and flexibility training to keep the heart rate in a target zone to spike the metabolism and increases energy.

  • 4 Sprint the stairs
Another American exercise which is sure to make waves in the UK is running steps. Trending in LA and a firm favourite with A-Listers including Jessica Beil and Fergy, the added load of working against gravity and keeping your balance helps to tone your calves as well as fuelling muscle power and strength in your quadriceps, glutes and hamstrings.

  • 5 Digital workouts
You don’t even need to leave your house to get fit thanks to an array of digital workouts. From HIIT training to yoga, YouTube videos have turned up a gear with live-streaming classes gaining momentum. So push the sofas back and get sweaty in the comfort of your own home!
