How To Maintain Lifelong Brain Health

3 MIN READ • 6th March 2025

The team at Efamol share six simple ways to help keep your brain healthy, whatever your age

It often gets overlooked for other areas of health and wellbeing, but brain health is important throughout our lives. As leaders in research into the role of omega-3 DHA and brain function, this subject is at the heart of everything we do at Efamol.

How DHA works in the brain

Did you know that our brains are mostly made up of fat? DHA is the most abundant omega-3 fatty acid; it is present in the outer structure of our cells and has consistently been found to play a unique role in the normal brain development of children and normal brain function throughout life.

How to keep your brain healthy

1. Keep active

Staying active is one of the best ways to keep your brain healthy and sharp. Exercise increases blood flow, delivering oxygen and nutrients that keep brain cells functioning properly. It also helps remove waste products that can contribute to cognitive decline. Physical activity also promotes neuroplasticity, meaning it helps your brain form new connections and adapt over time. This is especially important for memory, learning, and problem-solving skills.

2. Keep your mind engaged

Keeping your mind engaged is essential for maintaining cognitive function, memory, and overall mental wellbeing. Learning new information, solving puzzles, or practising recall exercises strengthens your brain’s ability to store and retrieve memories. This improves concentration, attention span and mental agility. Challenging your brain is hugely beneficial; one study suggests doing crossword puzzles delayed the onset of memory decline by 2.54 years.

3. Eat well

Your brain requires a variety of nutrients to maintain optimal health and protect it from damage. Specific foods have been linked to supporting brain function, including omega-3 fats, found in oily fish. The UK Government recommends that we eat one portion of oily fish per week.

Plant-based foods rich in antioxidant vitamins A, C and E help to protect the brain from oxidative stress.

4. Prioritise sleep

Sleep allows the brain to repair and restore itself. While you sleep, the brain clears out metabolic waste products and processes and consolidates information from the day. Quality sleep also enhances key cognitive functions like attention, problem-solving, decision-making and creativity. A well-rested brain is more focused and alert, improving your ability to think clearly and make better judgements.

5. Stay social

It’s important for all the family to have their fair share of social time, both together as a family and with friends. Encourage your children to meet their friends outdoors, as 20% of the fresh air you breathe in is used by your brain to function.

Having an active social life, volunteering for a local charity, or being part of something away from work can help stave off loneliness and depression, which can occur at any time of life. Combining learning something new with socialising with friends is an amazing brain tonic.

6. Supplement for brain health

Efamol Active Memory

Last but not least, you can always supplement with Efamol’s Active Memory capsules.

Efamol Active Memory is a specially formulated supplement designed to support brain function and memory. This advanced formula combines omega-3 fatty acids, B vitamins, ginkgo biloba, and phosphatidylserine. DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid, plays a crucial role in maintaining brain function*, while ginkgo biloba is recognised for its ability to maintain memory with age decline and preserve cognitive function. The addition of B vitamins, vitamins B12 and folic acid, which support normal psychological function and normal homocysteine metabolism, further support cognition, as high homocysteine has been linked to cognitive decline. Ensuring effective homocysteine metabolism can help protect against this. Phosphatidylserine is included as it is a component of the cell membranes of nerve and brain tissue. Efamol Active Memory has researched in three clinical trials to support its efficacy.

Whether you’re facing a busy workday or tackling new challenges, Efamol Active Memory provides the nutritional support needed to help support daily brain function, both now and in the future.

Efamol Active Memory is available from efamol.com as well as Boots and Amazon, priced at £11.99 for 30 capsules.

Food supplements are intended to supplement the diet and should not be used as a substitute for a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

*DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function. The beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 250 mg of DHA.
