Anti-ageing is a multibillion pound industry, and growing. But there are plenty of things you can do to help keep fine lines at bay, without reaching for expensive creams. Here are my top 10 tips to a younger, more vibrant you!
Brain power
It is one thing to look young, it’s another to feel young. It’s extremely important to have a sharp mind if longevity is your aim. Like every other part of our bodies, we must exercise our noggin in order to try to avoid it getting sluggish. Our brains need to be challenged in order to keep the neurological pathways open, so ‘use it or lose it’!
Eat up!
In order to look well on the outside, we must eat well and nourish our insides. Don’t skip carbohydrate foods – they should be a huge part pf your diet. The breakdown of what you should eat goes like this: 30-35 percent good fats, 15 percent protein and approximately 50 percent carbs. You can consume these carbs by eating things like oatmeal, rye bread, brown or wild rice, plus fruits and veggies.
Something fishy
Losing supple skin as the years roll by is a complaint I hear often, and one sure-fire way to combat this is to get your omega 3 fix. Omega 3 fatty acids help to plump skin and strengthen cell membranes, ensuring that they perform their functions (such as holding water optimally) well. Try having fish, fish oil, flaxseeds, chia seeds and walnuts.
Antioxidant power
I am sure you have all heard the term ‘free radicals’. These nasty things encourage the start of age-related diseases, and it’s antioxidants that neutralise and combat free radicals. You can take supplements, but it is easy to get antioxidants from your diet. Try having dark veggies, purple or blue berries, and green tea.
Egg on your face
Literally! If you are looking for a cheap but natural face-tightening mask, look no further than the kitchen. Egg whites can tighten skin, minimise pores and give a mini facelift effect! All you need to do is whip two egg whites, apply to your face, wait 20 minutes and rinse with warm water. Voila! Your complexion is brighter.
Fight back
The signs of skin-related inflammation are wrinkles, saggy skin and breakouts, to name a few. When dealing with anti-ageing, it’s important to reduce inflammation. A powerhouse combo is a mix of turmeric and olive oil, which is a skin saver in its own right, due to the oil’s good fats enabling the turmeric to be absorbed by your body. Before eating, have half a teaspoon of olive oil mixed with a quarter teaspoon of turmeric. You’ll be ready to fight inflammation!
Sleep it off
Lack of sleep can have a huge effect on our lifespan. Research has shown that, if you get less than six hours of sleep a night, you are at a greater risk of having a heart attack. A minimum of eight hours of sleep each night is important for health, mood and longevity.
Sweet dreams
On the subject of sleep, what you sleep on is just as important as how much sleep you get. Sleeping on a silk pillowcase can help your skin retain moisture and therefore reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
