Forest bathing at South Lodge

Here’s why forest bathing is great for switching off

4 MIN READ • 17th December 2024

Writer Holly Treacy-West attended her first forest bathing retreat - here's what happened when she immersed herself in nature

Earlier this year, I had the chance to enjoy a relaxing Nature Immersion Spa Experience at South Lodge. This experience was led by forest-bathing expert Helena Skoog.

This well-planned day promised to help us escape from our daily routines. It offered a chance to refresh our senses and reconnect with nature. It truly delivered on all these promises.

A Setting of Natural Beauty and Luxury

Nestled within the picturesque landscape of the South Downs, South Lodge seamlessly blends luxury with nature. From the moment I arrived, I felt an immediate sense of calm.

The 44,000 sq. ft spa, with its panoramic views and state-of-the-art facilities, set the perfect tone for the day ahead. I knew I was about to have a life-changing experience. It would mix mindful practices with the comfort and luxury South Lodge is famous for.

The Morning: Qigong and Breath Work

The day began with a morning wellbeing session led by Helena Skoog, founder of Forest Bathing Sussex. Helena has a strong connection to nature. She lived off-grid in ancient forests for five years. This made her the perfect guide for this experience.

The Qigong and breath work session was a gentle yet profound start. Helena guided us through mindful movements and focused breathing exercises designed to balance the nervous systems. I could feel the stress of modern life melting away as my mind quietened and my body relaxed. The serene spa setting, combined with Helena’s calming presence, created a powerful sense of stillness and grounding.

A Nourishing, Plant-Focused Lunch

Following the morning session, we gathered in Botanica, South Lodge’s Mediterranean-inspired restaurant. The light, two-course lunch featured fresh, seasonal ingredients and showcased standout plant-based dishes. Each bite felt like part of the experience. Nourishing, wholesome, and matching the day’s themes of renewal and balance, the meal provided a perfect experience.

Botanica’s commitment to sustainability was evident, with a focus on dairy-free options and a zero-waste approach. The dishes were not only delicious but also thoughtfully crafted, reflecting South Lodge’s dedication to health and wellbeing.

Afternoon: Immersive Forest Bathing Experience

The highlight of the day was the guided forest bathing session led by Helena. Shinrin-Yoku is a traditional practice from Japan. It encourages you to slow down and be present. You can connect with the forest using all your senses.

Helena’s expert facilitation encouraged us to notice the forest’s languages of renewal, growth, and change. As autumn arrived during the retreat, we saw golden leaves all around us.

We smelled the earthy scent of mushrooms and heard the satisfying crunch of leaves beneath our feet. It reminded us of nature’s cycles, like change and renewal. It was a lovely metaphor for the mind’s power to reset and heal.

What struck me most was the simplicity and power of the experience. Without distractions, I found myself fully immersed in the sights, sounds, and sensations of the forest. By the end of the walk, I felt lighter, calmer, and deeply connected to both myself and the natural world.

Rest and Relaxation in the Spa

The day ended at the spa. The guide encouraged us to relax and enjoy the benefits of forest bathing.

South Lodge has great facilities. These include saunas, steam rooms, an infinity pool, and an outdoor vitality pool.

They provide the perfect space to relax. The chance to swim in the natural pool felt refreshing and calming. It helped me reconnect with nature in a physical and thoughtful way.

The experience included dinner, a calm night’s sleep in the Elizabeth Le Bay Suite, and a relaxed breakfast at Botanica.

A Transformative Experience

To feel less anxious, reduce tension, or simply find a moment of calm, this experience is for you. This will help you feel re-energised and more connected to yourself and nature. I left South Lodge with a renewed sense of clarity and calm, ready to carry the lessons of the forest into my everyday life.

For those eager to embark on their own forest bathing journey, the 2025 dates are as follows:
